  1. This film seemed to be a lot of fun for all involved as well as the viewers.
It had a real laid back feel to it. In fact, Bowie’s barn owl didn’t even give a hoot!

  2. Great episode guys, but you actually missed a Star Trek connection. Dr. Beverly Crusher herself, Gates McFadden(credited as Cheryl McFadden) was a choreographer on Labyrinth, and Dark Crystal as well.

  4. If you see the extras to this movie, as mentioned before, Gates McFadden is shown doing the choreography.

Bryan Froud did the character designs for this movie (who is the father of the actor/baby in this movie, Toby Froud). Bryan Froud also did the character designs for the Dark Crystal as well. More information on him is at: http://www.worldoffroud.com/www/films/main/index.cfm

  5. Hey Scott and the wrest of the Sack crew

great episode, hada few things i felt i should point out ,(granted two of them have been covered by others already )

but here is so more fun Facts about Labyrinth,

I used to work with the muppet Shop in NYC, and most of theose folks worked on Labyrinth when i was a kid,
so one story i was told, was that Young Miss Conelley started developing during filming, and her chest had to be disguised by the Costume designers, on set as filming went along.

    Some puppet Fun Facts,

Hensons creature shop had really nothing to do with Yoda, or any of the Return of the Jedi Creations, but Jim was not secretive at all about how things were done, Stuart Freeborn, the british Make artist and sculpture created the Yoda Puppet, (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Freeborn) but im sure inspiration for the puppet creature, and how he would be controlled stemed from Jims work on the Dark Crystal.

Elmos Puppeteer Kevin Clash is one of the Fiereyies those dudes with detacable limbs, even though its not your favorite scens, i think you would love this video showing how a team of 4 puppeteers would bring just on character to life.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQTXmkhDDdg&feature=PlayList&p=0CD8C82BB34ED7B8&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=14) at about 7:29

you may not have had the genius of Terry Gilliam, but another Python Alumnis was on hand Terry Jones.

anyway , just wanted to share, keep up the great work, next time you do a Henson realted film, feel free to get in touch with me for some fact checking .

  6. Since you’re heading down Henson memory lane, I hope HOPE you do The Dark Crystal at some point.

Don’t know if you know of two of Henson’s very early features he did for television, or even if they’d work for the show, but they’re definitely worth checking out — Time Piece (1965), and The Cube (1969). They may work for a Film Sack just about Henson, and not focused on one particular movie.

Time Piece is a short, only about 10 minutes of bizarre montage with Henson dressed as a 19th century bird man trying to fly.

The Cube (not to be confused with the sci-fi stuff of 1997) is a bizarre existential screenplay he wrote for NBC Experiments in Television, and it only aired twice (as far as I know). It feels like Henson was channeling Sam Beckett. The story follows a man who wakes up inside this kind of padded cube, and can’t understand why he’s there. Every now and then, a panel from one of the walls, opens up, and someone comes in to offer him dinner, ask him questions, play music, try to seduce him, etc., but he can’t find out why he’s there or how to get out. It ends with no singing and no dancing.

Oh, and Scott: I would pay PAY for an mp3 album of you covering the best of David Bowie. Seriously, just cut the album a capella and release it on LaLa.com or someplace — just as long as you do that kind of half-shout/half-singing thing, it’s comedy gold. A few requests: Space Oddity, John I’m Only Dancing, and of course Rebel Rebel.

(Isn’t Prince sort of the American version of David Bowie, the androgynous enigmatic pop star?)

  7. About the baby:

    What’s happened to…Toby Froud?

    Published Date: 05 May 2007
“DANCE, Magic Dance,” are the immortal words David Bowie sang in Labyrinth, the 1986 Jim Henson/George Lucas classic.
Arguably one of the greatest childhood films ever made, it still gives many adults a secret pleasure to watch Bowie strut around in tight leggings, surrounded by Henson’s goblins, fairies and fire creatures. But what became of the red-and-white jumpsuit-wearing infant Toby, he who was kidnapped by Bowie’s Goblin King, forcing brattish 14-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly, displaying early woodenness) on an epic quest to get him back?

Played by Toby Froud, he’s the son of Brian and Wendy Froud, the designers on Labyrinth, who handed the toddler over to coo, stare and crawl around in the motion picture. Rather than being scarred for life, Froud embraced puppeteering, performance and filming. After studying in London, he apprenticed at the muppet workshop in New York and on the Lord of the Rings in New Zealand. Remember Scissor Sisters’ opener at the 2005 Brits, when the pink flamingo hatched two golden eggs containing Jake Shears and Ana Matronic? That was little Toby pulling the strings.

He still works closely with his parents – and at http://www.worldoffroud.com you can marvel at their creations, and get details of comic conventions, exhibitions and an annual faerieworlds festival, whatever that is. Recently he’s been a stilt-walker, and a dancing bear with a troupe that has toured England. He makes puppets himself, and is working on a short film featuring his creations, as well as some projects with his dad. Is there no end to the boy’s talents?

  8. I really enjoyed this episode. The Henson magic was strong in this film.

Scott mentioned that Henson’s work tended not to be as dark as Tim Burton.

One of my favourite pieces of Jim Henson creature shop work was the 1985 film “Dreamchild”, written by Dennis Potter. This film is a fictional story of Alice Liddell (the Alice who inspired Louis Carroll) as she travelled to America in her old age as part of celebrations of 100 years from Lewis Carroll’s birth.

In this film, Alice has several hallucinations involving characters from the Carroll books, and these characters were played by Henson workshop creatures. These were not the friendly, comical characters people known from the Carroll books, but darker, sometimes disturbing twists on these characters. I remember them to be quite unsettling.

It makes an interesting contrast to Burton’s recent film about Alice.

  9. This was my favorite episode ever! Of course, that’s because I wore out 3 copies of this movie on VHS when I was a kid and as a teenager, I wrote really bad Labyrinth fanfiction so… yeah ;) Is it sad that I can quote most of that movie along with the actors? Don’t answer that question ;)

  10. I took a flight from Vancouver to Toronto last week. I had Labyrinth loaded up on my iPad for the flight. I’ve never seen it, so I wanted to watch it prior to the podcast. After boarding there was a child near me on the plane bawling non- stop. Finally, after 20 minutes of loading passengers, take off and accent I could finally pull out my iPad, plug in my head phones and drown out that god- forsaken crying! You can imagine my shocking horror when the first 10 minutes of the movie involves a crying child. Oh cruel fate — why do you mock me!!!!

  11. and another lil gem of info the bit where the fire gang are singing one of the voices is danny jhon jules recognise the name? its CAT from red dwarf :P

  12. Great show guys! A movie that is also in this genre is A Neverending Story and it’s now on Netflix. Everyone talking about giant German puppets would make for an awesome episode! Thanks for creating these shows, I’ve enjoyed every one of them.

  13. Brian, what a great fun podcast. Went back and listened to most all of these as I have seen most of these films. Why is the “Planet of the Apes” episode listed on a different page so you have to go looking for it??
Might I suggest a couple of my fave films for youse guys to review/poke fun at….
    1. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension ( the first DVD i ever bought and musically you should love this)
    2. Six-String Samurai (another great musical movie and lots of fun)
    3. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (i love the comics and the concept) and
    4. Bubba Ho-Tep (with the wonderful Bruce Campell and Ossie Davis as the black JFK)

  14. Great episode – loved Bibbott’s DB impressions!

Take a point each off your Star Wars geek register though – Frank Oz and Kenny Baker were both in this movie, don’t recall you mentioning this!

Just another suggestion – Time Bandits.

  15. My 2 all time favorite movies are Labyrinth and The Dark crystal

Since you loved Labyrinth, you guys really have to watch Dark Crystal, its all Jim Henson puppetry and omg it is AWESOME. It moves me every time i watch it and I think it still stands up to todays movies. And there are no visible humans in this movie, it is ALL puppets!

and in the next year or two there is going to be a sequel and they have gone back to their roots and its going to be puppets and not all that cg crap that everyone does now

I would be eternally happy to hear you guys review Dark Crystal!
