  1. When they advertised Expendables it was supposed to be this non-stop action movie testosterone fest. Here were all these action stars with big guns and here we see them blowing stuff up.
The problem is that it’s not this and that was my problem with the movie in the theater. The Mickey Rourke portions were tacked on (like the girlfriend thing with Statham) to make these characters seem real and for you to care about it. This was Stallone as the writer, director, producer, caterer and pharmacist (Lets not forget he got caught using steroids during the filming) trying to make his movie seem real and fleshed out.
But that was the wrong approach because of the commercials and trailers. I wanted to see things blow up for 2 hours. I didnt want character development. I didnt care about the characters. Do I get character development in Die Hard 1? Not much. It’s an action movie for 3/4rs of it. This was a waste of time, effort, steroids and actors.
My guess is that Expendables 2 will be more of the same. Less action with more character building. Which will suffer in the name of having 400 actors in the movie. It’s a lot of ego’s to wrangle

  2. Dunaway’s open was absolutely classic. Hilarious – I am re-listening just for the beginning and all the openings, great job guys!

  3. I can’t wait to see Chuck Norris is in the next one.
Also, it’s hard to believe that Film Sack hasn’t done a Chuck Norris movie.

    The Octagon
    Invasion USA
    Lone Wold McQuad

  4. Glad you guys didn’t like this nostalgia-fest…why does Stallone insist on being a writer/director outside his Rocky series I’ll never know. But disagree about your opinions of the Crank movies; they’re so over-the-top and transgressive it works as an action-comedy for me. In the same vein and more obviously tongue-in-cheek is Torque, pretty much a Fast Furious Five parody w/Ice Cube Adam Scott about motorcycles, not cars. Shoot ‘Em Up is another wildly stupid, wildly fun (and funnily mean-spirited) actioner starring Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti, surprisingly good actors slumming it for street-cred.

If Roadhouse ever streams on netflix, just drop whatever movie is scheduled for the show and Sack it immediately. The Swayze at his peak, Sam “Beef it’s what’s fer dinner” Elliott, and Ben Gazarra as “Wesley” ;-P. However, I will be watching the dancing movie that has Ferris’ sister for the first time when it gets Sacked so…what better way to watch it, right?

  5. The age difference between Stallone and the Sandra character (36 years) is large yes but it did not make me as uncomfortable as the one between Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones in Entrapment (40 years) when i left the theater on that one i felt soiled.

  6. First and foremost let me state that I have listened to every single one of these sacks and for the most part I truly enjoy them. I do however have one concern with them, it seems that there is an inability to separate the player from the part in a good deal of these. An Actor is acting, and what they do outside of that job, should have no bearing on whether or not the product that they are a part of is affected by that life at all. Yes Arnold messed up, many many people have, that doesn’t taint every thing he has done as an actor, and if you are expecting actors to be the pinnacle of humanity you will be sorely disapointed over and over. My other issue is that recently you guys seem to be looking at the older films and constantly stating that they are not any good, because they are not using modern sensibilities. Having said that, I do enjoy these and it gives me something to listen to wile doing paperwork on Friday mornings, so keep it up!

  7. I have to agree that the story was just disappointing. What are we doing now with action movies where we’re pretending its the early 1980s and we’re sending mercs to Central or South America to depose the Presidente du jour. Quantum of Solace did the same thing, evil CIA backs or at least stands aside while evil organization overthrows leftwing S. American President in favor of a junta. The Losers was another example. Really? Is this what I have to look forward to for action movies now?

I don’t know, I thought I was going to see something like Die Hard or Predator and all I ended up seeing was a remake of Wild Geese.

  8. Also, having seen an actual beheading occur using a knife (don’t ask me how), seeing Stallone decapitate the guard BACKHAND is the stupidest thing I have seen in an action movie to date.

  9. I really enjoyed thsi one. Randy was “ON” like no other time before. His reality show music comment was golden and spot on. I actually wanted the Expendibles to have 1 more cheesy turn . They asked him to get rid of Hector Batista from Dexter, not the man pullignthe stings behind him. I wanted Chruch to gte mad and at the end of the Expendibels, we see Arnolds team of Merc’s. It woudl have been cameos of Steven Segal, Micahel Duticoff, and a ton of other 80′s/90′s stars.

I dont care what anyone says, Rocky 3 was AWESOME with Mr. T (his commercials were the reason I played WOW).

  10. Great new site BTW.
This movie was great, I like the old movie action hero’s scenes, Stalone was very good in this movie. Maybe the next movie wil have a better story. The story was a little lame.
    I missed some BOOBIES
    Great podcast,
    greetings from the Netherlands.
