  2. Show’s been out for almost a week, yet there are no comments so far? Does everyone feel so “meh” about it?

    I was so happy when I learned you guys were going to sack Vanilla Sky.
    I still like this film very much. Always have. I’m a Cameron Crowe nut. Well, not anymore… up until Elizabethtown (to this day I don’t understand the hate that movie gets.) His films are always so earnest and heartfelt. I guess it is a big no-no in our irony-ridden age.
    Vanilla Sky was a strange fit for Crowe. It was also the first time he worked with foreign material (the original Alejandro Amenábar movie, which – at least in my opinion – is inferior to VS… a good idea executed in an amateurish way). Having said that he completely made it his own by cramming it to the gill with music and pop culture in general.

    I was always on the opinion that Vanilla Sky is what it is. There’s no “it was all a dream” anywhere. It’s how Noah Taylor’s character (who’s Australian, not English, by the way, Scott) (over)explains it.

    Crowe OK-ing all those fan theories is – just like Dunaway said – what artists do. They create something, then they leave the interpretation to the beholder.
    Paul Thomas Anderson NEVER answers questions that try to get him to tell “what he was trying to tell the audience by this or that”. I kind of like this approach. I’m not particularily good at decoding films like The Master or Inherent Vice, but I do enjoy going online and finding the theory with which I can get on board.

    Also, Singles was not only written, but also directed by Crowe.

    Maybe my love for this guy stems from his audio commentary for the director’s cut of Almost Famous, which he calls “Untitled” (one of my favourite feel-good movies). It has his actual mom reminiscing about their shared life events that served as the basis of the film. Despite this it is never not interesting or insightful. I highly recommend it.

    • I love Elizabethtown. I wish I didn’t, because when I try to share it with someone who hasn’t seen it, they think less of me. Every time.

      I think I’ll live my whole life and die without ever figuring out what The Hollies’ song Jesus Was A Crossmaker has to do with Orlando Bloom’s character’s situation at the beginning of that movie. I guess I’m okay with that.

    • I too was surprised by the lack of comments here.

      I was also surprised to hear that most of the podcast hosts had not seen the original.

      I liked both versions, but I have only watched them once.

    • I was waiting to actually see this one, and haven’t gotten to it yet. Comments may be closed before I get a chance.
